Honorary Chairperson

We are honored to present Barbara Grey as the Honorary Chairperson of the 2017 Art in the Atrium.

An educator for 33 years, Barbara gave learning new meaning. Her first teaching assignment was in a one-room schoolhouse in Buckingham County. While fetching water from the spring, students were encouraged to learn about the environment. Before interdisciplinary teaching was “in,” she instilled in her students the importance of understanding and interacting in the world outside the classroom. Barbara and her late husband lived in Europe while he served as an Army officer. She taught in France and Germany and learned about open education, the Summerhill philosophy.

In 1964, Barbara earned a Master’s degree from New York University in early childhood education. As principal of John B. Cary Model Elementary School, Barbara’s efforts were noted by the U. S. Department of Education. Her school was selected as one of the fifteen best in the country. Her innovative work at William Fox Elementary was featured in Southern Living. In 1986, Barbara was named one of the YWCA’s Outstanding Women. She was named Richmonder of the Year in 1988. She retired from Fox Elementary in 1990.

Barbara is director of the campus art museum at Virginia Union University, her undergraduate alma mater.

Barbara and her sons, Robert J. Grey, Jr. and Michael R. Grey, are members of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. Both sons have graciously shared their mother with untold numbers of students who have been inspired by her hope for the future.
